welmon sharlehorne > b.1952

Welmon Sharlhorne is an Afro-American self taught artist that creates pictures of imaginary spaces and creatures using pens and markers on paper. The stark images of surreal empty buildings are often punctuated with a clock. Architectural perspective, windows, and closed doors often defy logic with ambiguous spaces defined by patterned shapes. His birds and creatures that appears prehistoric also have clocks incorporated into their bodies.

The black and white enclosures and clocks derive from many years spent in prisions where walls and time had added significance. Following the death of his mother, Welmon focused his energy into creating art in order to leave a legacy and rise above his past troubles.

Welmon Sharlhorne was exhibited at the Musee Collection De l'Art Brut in Lausanne, Switzerland, The Noyes Museum, and the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore.
